Kahawa @ Ra Marama House

Kahawa's Ra Marama House shop has closed ... the sandwhiches are still available, you're just going to have to go to Suva Central to get them now.

The Kahawa name is shared by two coffee houses in Suva. Kahawa @ Ra Marama House probably has the nicest atmosphere of any of the various coffee houses of Suva. It truly is a nice place to sit and wind down. Free wireless internet is just the icing on the cake.

One thing Kahawa excells at is sandwiches. We're talking about rolls here: big rolls, about a foot long, and very well filled too. I also love the fact that you can almost always get a wholemeal roll. This makes them major heros in my books, but it gets better!

This is the only place in Suva where a half roll is half the price of a full roll. Half the price for half the product! Even though I never buy a half roll, but this really warms the cockles of my heart.

My favourite is the Chicken Salad roll, $5.80 for the full sandwich, $2.90 for the genuine half-roll, dainty-eater version.

Tuna Salad, Steak & Cheese, Italian Meatballs, and Chicken & Bacon round out the sandwich options. At just less than $8, the Steak and Cheese is the most expensive of the lot, but is still very good value for money and tummy.

The sandwich can be accompanied by the usual dose of caffeine, or with fresh fruit juice; or on hot days, an iced-drink.

All orders can be eaten at the scene or dragged back to the office.

Kahawa also offers the usual range of coffee house mini-savouries and sweets, should you not feel like a sandwich. I have not had any luck with their pies: puff pastry has never given me joy, and I'm sure it's harmful to the ozone layer.

In Summary

Kahawa @ Ra Marama House
Ground Floor, Ra Marama House, 91 Gordon St
Opening Hours
8am - 7pm weekdays
Spend
$3 - $8 per person
Verdict
Thumbs-up

Well, I hope they serve great Coffee, quite particular with my coffee's. Had a flat white at that Coffee house opposite Suva Center, or between Jacks and the Duty Free Shop. I have never tasted anything so crappy! It tasted like nescafe coffee with froth on the top, the service? Well, it was not friendly.

Don't recommend anyone going there!

the photograpy is not good. appetizing? hardly.

the food in it self...my friend took me there for lunch when i was visiting - i've tasted better.

the only thing that stands out about this place is the friendly personalities of the staff. they could sell you horseshit and you'd buy it. okay. not that good. but you know what i mean.

Bollocks, I love americans. You just have to cook them with the right combination of herbs to get rid of that odd smell. Otherwise they are nice and tender, with great marbling

Meanwhile, a friend n i went to that Coffee place opp Central and got an experince worth mentioning. It was a public holiday and granted they may have been a little busy but hey, since we gonna be paying that much, at least it should be up to basic standards. So anyways, my friend asked how long our order would be to which the not-so-friendly staff gave an exasperated reply. We sat down to chat and wait. When it was finally popped onto our table after a long n agonizing wait, we stared in disbelief.OUr drinks were late but this totally took the cake. Our toasted bun was so overdone that it was dark charcoal black on the surface. (Do they expect people to eat that? and Dont they know that kinda burnt stuff is carcinogenic?) We were more amazed at the staff who had the audacity to bring it to our table!Anyway, this was not the first time n it makes u wonder at what they- management must be doing about it!-or if they know at all.

Well I must say that the place opposite Suva Central used to serve nice coffee with good taste, fancy toppings and funky designs as well when they were "young" but over time the cream topping has disappeared and so has the tasty coffee with friendly service. For some particular reason I do not get it why the staff cannot be a tincy wincy bit friendly!
And this mind you, applies to most of the coffee shops and restaurants around the city!

Looks like the 'bula' spirit is fading.

I tried the coffee at both Ra Marama and the one near Jacks - they both serve lovely edible items (including one very hot lookin waitress who comes in a few times a week).

The service is wonderful at both ends (dunno why fff thinks otherwise) and the staff are really friendly and polite but definitely quieter and at Ra Marama as it is away from the din of the city to some extent. Anyone tried their panini's??? They're impressive - especially the chicken one!!!
