Sweet-T-Pie Coffee Café

This Nasese eatery has closed ... well, it's been closed and sold and is currently under renovation by it's new owners. We will doubtless see further action at this location (it's too close to the new FIRCA hq to go to waste), but in the mean time, take yourself to the new Cakes 2000 digs on Butt St.

Cakes 2000 has had more locations and incarnations than I care to remember. Their latest incarnation in Nasese takes the form of a combined cake-shop and café-style eatery, alternately branded Cakes2000 and Sweet-T-Pie Café.

Their lunch menu consist mainly of:

  • A BBQ/Grill section

The grill has never made me happy ... steak not tender enough, chicken breasts not quite cooked ... or maybe I've just been on all the wrong days.

  • All-Day Breakfasts

A range of protein-rich, 'get-me-started' meals from $6.50 - $11. These have never let me down. The omelettes in particular are always good. Absolutely recommended.

  • Miscellany at the counter

A very boring selection of sandwiches, a couple of very heavy stuffed-croissants, a couple of salads, and quite possibly the best fresh fruit-salad in Suva. If you're lucky, you might visit when chocolate éclairs are available, otherwise there will be a small selection of deserts and cakes.

Drinks are a little limited. There is a small selection of fresh fruit juice & smoothies, and a limited espresso stand. A request for anything beyond that will get you a recommendation to visit the soft-drink fridge in the corner shop next door.

I am unable to recommend eating-in unless it is pouring rain, or you turn up very early in the morning to partake of the breakfast menu. The only tables available are outdoors, and under a heavy canvas awning, which does a wonderful pressure-cooker impression if the sun is anywhere in sight. This recommendation may change ... there seems to be work on a new premises on Butt St in the heart of Suva, which promises a large indoor eating area.

Update by kania tiko on 19th April: While the omelettes in general are good, the notable exception are the ones with cheese in them - they use some nasty processed kraft-like "cheese food" substance - prompting me to ask "what's wrong with good old Rewa Cheddar?" In their defence, Picky Eater swears he got the good stuff when last he ate there.

In Summary:

Sweet-T-Pie Coffee Cafe (aka Cakes 2000)
Ratu Sukuna Rd, Nasese
Opening hours
7am - 6pm Monday to Friday, 7am - 3pm on Saturday, 8am - 2pm on Sunday
Spend
$5 - $10 per person
Verdict
A caveated thumbs-up, and thumbs down to "processed cheese foods" of all kinds

I used to enjoy lunching with the girls at this cozy little cafe but the lady behind the counter has put me off. I thought she lacked common courtesy and had poor communication skills. It was as if she was more important than the customers who pay for her wages!

seti, just say ga that you went to cina over there and that she gave you the what for.

The lady is nasty! Once she was giving me a nasty glare after I asked if they could make a salad sandwich with no mayo. I took it away with my boyfriend who ordered steak something...

Then voila! A caterpillar popped out. I am sure I have ingested some sort of bugs and insects(unknowingly of course) but this was crazy! I was famished!! No I couldnt eat it had something else like dry bread and water :(

One question, they claim to make eggless cakes, can some one please verify this?

Well we dont know the both sides of the story, who knows you may have been rude in your approach, they are humans too you know and should be given the same respect as you give yourself. However, the caterpillar thing, well, strange, mmm, and the eggless thing, mmmm again,... this anonymous person sounds kinda disgruntled about something...sour grapes maybe....terminated person or friend of or jealously maybe,...otherwise I think the boss lady of this little cozy cafe would have heard of it by now...Cmon, evrybody has a bad hairday even you, relax, and maybe that lady will smile at you next time...

Haha! Anonymous May 07 7:22..funny!but u have a point!!Ive been to many places myself where the service is bad but having also worked in a takeaway shop, i understand what it can be like. Sometimes we tend to see things only from our own perspective. As a customer, we feel its the staff's responsibility to treat us nicely(well yeh it is...but sometimes we fail to see that the person serving us might be having a bad day/week/year at work - bad boss, endless work, rude customers..heck!u wud feel bad if u hav2 stand 8hrs or more a day serving customers)..not to mention the extra requests we make(which sometimes would seem like a deliberate attempt on our part to make their work more complicated)..But then, having said that, i do believe that customers ought to be treated courteously(oh how i wish i cud live up to dat wen behind the counter)...i mean, thats why we there right? To serve the customer!Especially in places where u're paying a good price-unfriendly service is just not good!ok so u dont feel like smiling but at least dont make the customer feel like u're been rude!

All in all, put yourself in the other person's shoes and as a customer, try to help them(the staff)to help u.

So next time u walk into a shop etc, put an extra-cheese smile on your face and greet the other person warmly..and if that doesnt work, try exclaiming at what great food they have(Ive found this works for me!and hey, i knw what im talking about, having been on both ends) ;)

Just a word of warning tho~some bad days r just too bad to be rescued but then hey wat matters is u tried! Then u can justifiably grumble about wat bad service they have..lol!

All the best peeps and HAPPY DINING!!!

hey suki! i lyk wat u say ;D You are right about both parties being friendly but i believe that peeps behind the counter need always cover their bad days/years/hrs wahtever...cos they are selling and we are buying, but of course that doesnt mean that we customers go with an attitude.

I have come across some ppl who are forever on their high horses and no amount of cheesy smile will crack that pasted frown on their face!! Remember Boulevard? that korean lady in the second shop from the right...yeah!

Nothing is perfect. We cannot find good food, good service and good sitting all in one restaurant. So I believe it will take some time (and education) for our paradise like country to meet our expectations!

this place is not too cool - even though its just out of suva and quiet, the quality of the service is a little slack... yea, I agree with the writers who complain the lady there has a bit of a customer service skill problem... she's more or less telling people that if u dont like what you get, then piss off... figurtively speaking that is...

~r.d~ can i ask you which lady u refer to pray? I am a regular at this little spot and I find all the ladies quite chirppy and nice! I have never had a problem with the chubby fijian lass or the slim tall fijian lass? They hav been quite nice to me and my collegues.who do u refer to. I do admit service sometimes is slow, but its the same everywhere, but the girls have never given me a face.

Samantha MAY 18 9.50, can i give you a tip, i dont know u and your expectations but a new place just opened on butt street, beloww LICI building, its one of Cakes 2000 newest cafes, called Coffee Roast Grill Cafe, my husband and I have been in there and its very nice, the food too was good. The lady behind the counter there is LOVELY.Give it a go.

All we expect is to get good food and good service- I dont think that is too much to ask for. I also dont think people should victimise the "nasty lady behind the counter".

It is not hard to smile. Being a mother, i am tired and come home- I try my best not to be grumpy through out the day to the customers and to my family. People in the service industry should be more aware of little details such as body language, smiling and tone of voice. You need to make the whole experience pleasant. You owe it to your job, your employers count on you to make more business and your employers owe it to you to send you on training and or keep you happy. Being service oriented and how you make your customers feel is your tool, and a powerful one too. Use it well and you will be successful. Abuse it and no matter what your business will fail. Its not just about the food.

There is a cashier in Cost U Less that always makes people smile.

Besides posting here is a matter of opinions which are our own) I dont think anyone should say "No you did not feel that way, really you didn't, you felt this way and this is why you felt this way"

Admins? Where are the new reviews :) more eatrys have popped out.
